Things to do during your stay

We could keep you happily busy for months! Here are a few suggestions.

Go Sailing

Deltaville boatyards and the Chesapeake Bay are just minutes away. Other marinas on the Rappahannock River are very close by, as well.

Not ready to go out on your own? Learn to sail! Courses at every level are available in Deltaville.

Go Fishing

Fishing charters run from Deltaville, Rappahannock River marinas and the Northern Neck. From 3 to 30 minutes away, you have a wide choice of fishing boats and captains.

Kayak

Skip the power boats and get your exercise in a kayak or canoe. Bring your kayak, buy one locally, or join Bay Trails in Mathews for a tour.

Kayak the Piankatank or Rappahannock Rivers, or follow some of the 90 miles of Chesapeake Bay water trails of neighboring Mathews county.

Golf

There is a good golf course just a few minutes away, and a wide choice within easy reach.  All phone numbers below are in area code 804.

  • Our local course:  Piankatank River Golf Course 776-6516
  • Just across the Rappahannock:  Windmill Point Resort, White Stone 435-1166
  • Nearby on the Northern Neck:  The Tides Resort, Irvington 438-6200 , also offers lessons
  • Tappahannock, further up the Middle Peninsula, is home to Hobbs Hole Golf Course, 443-4500, and the (public) Woodside Country Club, 443-4060
  • In Gloucester, a half hour south, a very basic, public Gloucester Country Club, 693-2662
  • The Williamsburg area is outstanding for golf, offering at least 15 courses within an hour of us.

Go to the Beach, Play Outdoors

This is a peaceful area of rolling countryside, good roads, and beautiful water. There are many ways to enjoy it.

  • Laze and swim at the beach.  Just 3 miles away are small sand beaches (seen at left) on the Rappahannock. Gloucester Point and Yorktown beaches are about 40 minutes away.
  • Play tennis on Deltaville's free public courts.
  • Bike ride along the country roads.
  • Go bird watching: follow Virginia's Birding & Wildlife Trails.

Explore History

Within an hour's drive in any direction, there are many sites worth a visit.

  • Jamestown was where the Virginia Colony began. So, in fact, where America was born.
  • Williamsburg was the longterm seat of colonial government.
  • James River Plantations are a fascinating glimpse of planter life.
  • Yorktown is where victory brought us independence, ending the colonial era.
  • The Northern Neck was home to the Washington, Lee, and Ball families.
  • Richmond, rich in history, has a fine art museum as well as the statehouse and Museum of the Confederacy.
  • Tangier Island is an enjoyable day trip by car and boat.

Find Your Ancestors

As part of Tidewater Virginia, this area has some of our country's oldest settlements. The courthouses have a wealth of records for genealogical research. Here is but a small sample of the area's wealth of resources that have survived wars, rebellions, fires and storms:

  • Middlesex County courthouse has land, probate and court records from 1653.
  • Lancaster County, our parent county and neighbor to the north, has records from 1651.
  • Essex County, our neighbor up the peninsula, has records from its founding in 1692.
  • Gloucester County, our neighbor the the south, while created in 1651, has had many documents destroyed, but land records exist from 1733.
  • York County, south of Gloucester, was created in 1634 as Charles River County, and has records from its founding.

Of course, you can find records from every county at the Library of Virginia in Richmond, about an hour and ten minutes by car.

Shop

Deltaville, Hartfield and Urbanna, all right here in Middlesex county, have a number of charming shops.  If you extend your roaming to Gloucester county or Lancaster county, there are more stops than the most intrepid shopper could manage.
